How are teams judged?2025-05-27T14:05:27-04:00

In STEM Racing, teams are judged on far more than just how fast their car goes. The evaluation covers a wide range of criteria designed to reflect real-world STEM and business skills.

Judging categories include:

  • Engineering design and innovation

  • Car speed on the track

  • Project management and organization

  • Team identity and branding

  • Verbal presentation to a panel of judges

  • Sustainability practices

  • Pit display and visual impact

  • Scrutineering for technical compliance and safety

Each area is scored independently, and the most successful teams perform strongly across all categories—not just in racing.

How fast do the cars go?2025-05-27T14:04:24-04:00

The miniature cars in STEM Racing are powered by compressed CO₂ cartridges and can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) on a 20-meter track—often completing the run in just over one second.

Because of their light weight and aerodynamic design, the acceleration is incredibly rapid. Teams must fine-tune every element—wheel alignment, weight balance, lubrication, and launch mechanism—to gain fractions of a second that can make the difference between winning and losing.

It’s not just about speed, though. Cars must also pass scrutineering for safety, design, and compliance with technical regulations before they can compete.

How do you build the race car?2025-05-27T14:03:13-04:00

The race car is built using a combination of digital design, physical modeling, and precision manufacturing. The team begins by creating 3D models using industry-standard CAD software. From there, they test different shapes for aerodynamics, weight distribution, and drag reduction.

Once the design is finalized, the car is machined from a special lightweight block using a CNC router. It’s then hand-finished, assembled, and painted to reflect the team’s branding. The wheels, axles, and CO₂ cartridge system must be installed with exact precision to meet competition regulations and achieve maximum speed.

Every step—from design to assembly—is handled by the students themselves, combining engineering principles with creativity and craftsmanship.

What do students do in the competition?2025-05-27T14:01:39-04:00

In STEM Racing, students take on the full responsibility of running a professional-style racing team. They design a miniature F1-style car using 3D modeling software, test its aerodynamics, and manufacture it using precise materials and equipment. But it doesn’t stop there.

Each team also develops a brand identity, builds a pit display, gives formal presentations to judges, and manages a budget—including fundraising and sponsorship outreach. Students take on specialized roles like design engineer, resource manager, and team leader, mimicking real-world career paths.

The competition is about more than racing—it’s a test of creativity, collaboration, engineering, and communication.

Is it really affiliated with Formula 1?2025-05-27T04:31:10-04:00

Yes, STEM Racing (formerly F1 in Schools) is officially supported by Formula 1. The program has long-standing relationships with F1 teams, engineers, and sponsors who believe in developing the next generation of talent through STEM education.

Why the name “ASAP”?2025-05-27T04:19:55-04:00

The name “ASAP” reflects the team’s fast-paced energy, urgency, and commitment to excellence. It’s a clever nod to both speed—essential in racing—and the drive to take action “As Soon As Possible.” At the same time, it reflects the team’s approach to STEM: bold, decisive, and willing to move quickly toward their goals.

“ASAP” also captures the spirit of the competition and the team’s identity as future leaders in science and innovation. It’s memorable, punchy, and perfectly suited to a team of girls pushing boundaries in a high-speed, high-stakes environment.

What is ASAP Racing?2025-05-27T04:15:25-04:00

ASAP Racing is an all-girls Canadian student team competing in the STEM Racing World Finals, formerly known as F1 in Schools—the world’s largest international STEM competition backed by Formula 1. The team is composed of five talented high school students from Montreal who are passionate about science, engineering, and motorsport.

Founded with the goal of breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields, ASAP Racing designs and builds a miniature Formula 1-style race car, powered by CO₂, while managing every aspect of a real-world engineering project—including branding, public speaking, aerodynamics, sponsorship, sustainability, and teamwork.

In their first year of competition, ASAP Racing placed 2nd in Canada, won six national awards, and earned the honour of representing Canada at the 2025 World Finals in Singapore.

ASAP Racing isn’t just building cars—they’re building confidence, leadership, and a global movement to show what young women in STEM can achieve when given the opportunity.
